Wonderful, traditional, cosy cottage nestled into the side of one of the loveliest dales in the White Peak, Derbyshire. Ideal for a walking holiday, as an artist's or photographer's base or just for plain relaxation. There is a very strong emphasis on the traditional but the cottage also has many modern conveniences: gas central heating, washer and tumble dryer, wifi etc. Outside there is a patio with garden furniture which gets lots of sun and is south-facing. There is a large storage shed for bikes etc.
Knoll Cottage

Knoll Cottage is situated at Coldwell End, Youlgrave on the side of a limestone dale with its magnificent views and sounds. The dale itself is an unspoilt site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and is populated by wonderful plants and birdlife. In the bottom of the wooded dale, the river flows through a series of trout ponds; along its banks and on the surrounding hills are wonderful walks - the dale forms part of the beautiful Limestone Way and is a continuation of Lathkilldale. The area is ideal for walking - either more gentle walks on the level along the river or more challenging, energetic ones striding over the hills.

Youlgrave
The village, with its typical Derbyshire stone cottages perched along the top of the dale, has a beautiful 14th century church (with a 19th century Burne-Jones window), three traditional pubs which serve food, a village post-office and several small grocers. Youlgrave is one of the Derbyshire villages in which the ancient tradition of well-dressing takes place - the local wells are decorated with large panels covered in pictures made from flower petals. In Youlgrave there are six wells that are dressed and one of them is found at the top of the lane leading down to the cottage. This tradition takes place close to midsummer in Youlgreave although it can be seen at different locations throughout the Peak during the summer.
Nearby Bakewell - historic market town
The market town of Bakewell is within 10 minutes' drive. It is lovely town with several restaurants and tea shops (including the baker's where the famous Bakewell tarts originated) and caters for most shopping needs. There is a good supermarket and an excellent fish and chip shop. There's also an open-air traditional market every Monday selling everything from food to shoes. Bakewell even has a small, modern swimming bath tucked away behind the small lanes of the town. The river Wye flows through the town and is crossed by a picturesque and ancient bridge. Walking along its banks you can see large trout and feed the wide range of water fowl. Bakewell caters well for walkers and has a number of excellent shops selling outdoor clothing. Youlgrave is also within easy reach of Buxton, the spa town which has beautiful Georgian architecture, much of which has been recently renovated. It is the centre of an opera festival each year.
Jane Austen is supposed to have stayed in the Rutland Arms in the centre of Bakewell while completing Pride and Prejudice. Nearby Chatsworth House, the seat of the Dukes of Devonshire, with its spectacular grounds, is reputed to have been the inspiration for Mr. Darcy's country home. Haddon Hall, the delightful Elizabethan seat of the Dukes of Rutland, is between Bakewell and Youlgreave and has a wonderful garden with old fashioned roses and amazing displays of delphiniums in early summer. The film of Jane Eyre was shot there.
